In memoriam: prominent theatre director Leon Daniel

Theatre director Leon Daniel, one of the most prominent and respected Bulgarian intellectuals, passed away on December 1 2008 at the age of 81, the Union of Bulgarian Artists said on December 2 2008, as quoted by Bulgarian news agency Focus.

Born in the Danubian town of Rousse in 1927, Daniel studied to become a theatre director in the Soviet Union. After his return to Bulgaria, he has worked in a number of theatres and film studios, including with the Bulgarian National Television among them. He is holder of numerous Bulgarian and international awards and has filmed three documentaries and one fiction films.

The, author of several books on the art of theatre, in 2007 Daniel was awarded the honorary Ikar award of the Union of Bulgarian Artists for his contribution to theatre in Bulgaria.
