Divers from the Civil Protection Guards had much fun on January 5 breaking the ice of the lake in Sofia's Drouzhba neighbourhood ahead of the January 6 Bogoyavlenie/Yordanovden (Epiphany). According to the Eastern Orthodox Christian calendar, Yordanovden marks the baptism of Christ by John the Baptist. During a church service water is consecrated after which the priest throws a cross into the water and, according to tradition, bachelors swim into the water to retrieve the cross. Whoever finds the cross is considered healthy and strong.
