EC vice-president Barrot: Bulgaria still not showing results from fighting crime

Two years after its accession to the European Union, Bulgaria had made little progress towards handing out court sentences to corrupt officials taking bribes and those giving them, European Commission vice-president Jacques Barrot said in Sofia on January 20.

Barrot, the commissioner responsible for justice, freedom and security, said that Bulgaria had a clear goal - to secure complete independence of its judiciary, transparency of its investigation units, and fight against corruption and organised crime on all levels.

Too many court cases were being postponed too few of them reached their final stage with sentences being issued, he said.

"We want Bulgaria to have a judicial system which is efficient enough...to combat organised crime and corruption," Barrot told the conference dedicated to Bulgaria's second anniversary of EU membership.

The conference was organised by the European Commission representation in Sofia together with the Open Society Institute, the Centre for Liberal Strategies and the Confederations of Industrialists and Employers in Bulgaria.
