Bulgarian bus hijacker surrenders to police

A man who used a pistol and a bomb threat to hijack a Sofia-Varna bus, demanding to speak to the media and to the man allegedly responsible for a road accident in which the hijacker's girlfriend allegedly miscarried, surrendered to police about three hours after the drama began.

None of the 36 passengers on the bus was injured during the hijacking, the Interior Ministry said on January 27 2009.

The incident started at about 1pm and ended shortly after 4pm when the man, reported to be 33 years old, surrendered to police, handing over the pistol. A report by television station bTV gave the name of the man, who is in police custody but who has not yet been charged in court.

The bus is owned by Biomet bus company. The hijacking took place soon after the bus left Sofia. After the incident, it was left parked at a fuel station in Sopot village on the Sofia-Varna road.

Bulgarian media reports said that a journalist who happened to be on board the bus told the hijacker that it would be possible to assist meet his demand to speak to the media.

The hijacker asked police to bring him a man who, according to the hijacker, was responsible for a road accident in August 2008 in which the hijacker's girlfriend, who had been pregnant, was injured. The hijacker said that he wanted to punish the person who caused the accident.
