FROM THE EDITOR: The elections question

The idea of holding the two elections scheduled for Bulgaria in 2009, those for the National Assembly and the European Parliament, on one day is perfectly sound.

Unfortunately, the debate on the question has descended into mutual finger-pointing by advocates and opponents of the idea, accusing each other of partisan motives.

It is well-known among political analysts that the larger a party is in terms of financial and human resources, the more likely it is to allow the fact of having to fight two campaigns to drain its weaker opponents.

It would be cheaper and simpler to organise in logistical terms, and these factors alone should be sufficient motivation to amend the constitution to allow the idea to go ahead.

Further, not only are many Bulgarians weary and disillusioned about politics and politicians, but also there is so much to be done in so many areas that the less time spent squabbling at the hustings, the better.

Inappropriate comment?

Clearly the DPS and BSP with strong core support would benefit from separate elections. The smaller and or new parties of the right would struggle with many Bulgarian voters staying away from the second poll. Beside the obvious question of costs and logistics Bulgaria would benefit from one election day - however this is unlikely to happen as the DPS and BSP will both cynically do whatever they can to deter Bulgarians from voting. Where are those "good Men" in Bulgarian politics - your country needs you today more than ever.

Every kidnapping in Bulgaria spawns innuendo about the victim, that somehow the episode is revenge for some other deed in the underworld.
