German retailer Metro shifts focus to own brands

German wholesale retailer Metro Cash&Carry will add new items under its own brand names to its product range, the company’s general manager for Eastern Europe and Bulgaria, Emiliyan Abadjiev, has said.

Own brands account for about seven per cent of the chain’s portfolio, but the share will grow to about 10 per cent over the next year and a half, Abadjiev said, adding that Metro was not done expanding in Bulgaria.

Metro has 24 own brands for around 800 products. The latest brand, Rioba, comprises coffee, juices, chocolates, sugar, cups and other items targeted at bars and cafés.

The construction of a new Metro store is expected to begin in Sofia in May. The chain has almost finished its expansion in Bulgaria, but believed the country had potential for two to four more stores, said Arabadjiev.

Metro Cash&Carry has 11 stores in Bulgaria’s major cities. The company plans to rename its local Aro mini supermarkets so that clients do not associate the store only with the low-cost brand.
