Activists from the ruling Bulgarian Socialist Party placed signs on Sofia's central Tsar Boris III Boulevard on February 8 2009 alleging that Sofia mayor Boiko Borissov was responsible for the grave condition of the boulevard.

The signs read "For mayor B. Borissov, Sofia ends here" and a warning sign saying "! Boiko B".

The move came as a response to the city hall's February 1 2009 decision to put up a sign blaming the Government for the poor conditions of the boulevard.

The city hall's sign said: "Sofia municipality apologises for the condition of this section of road 1/E79, which is owned by the state and for whose repair the state-run National Road Infrastructure Agency (NRIA) has failed to allocate funds."

Although the city hall and the NRIA have reached an agreement for starting repair works on the boulevard, BSP activists said they will continue putting up signs around the city on roads with potholes.

Borissov is leader of the largest party in opposition, the Citizens for the European Development of Bulgaria (abbreviated as GERB in Bulgarian), leading opinion polls ahead of this year's general elections for Parliament.
