Dimitrov stumbles in tournament at Besancon

Bulgaria's best tennis player Grigor Dimitrov lost his first round match at the hard-surface competition in Besançon, eastern France, on February 23 2009 against Uzbekistan's Denis Istomin, who was seeded number three at the tournament, in three sets (6:3, 2:6, 6:7).

The match went to the tie break in the third and final set where Dimitrov's concentration failed him again, forcing him out of the tournament which is part of the ATP Challenger Series and has a prize money of 107 000 euro.

Dimitrov had been awarded a wild card for the tournament. His defeat cost him six places in the ATP ranking. He is now world number 407 with 155 points.

Dimitrov could not repeat his stunning performances of the preceding two tournaments in his performance against world number 102 Istomin.

On February 17 2009 Dimitrov was just two points away from winning against world number eight, Frenchman Gilles Simon, in the first round of the Open13 tennis tournament in Marseilles. He lost in three sets (6:4, 3:6, 5:7)

Five days earlier Dimitrov received a warm round of applause from the crowd in Rotterdam after his second-round loss to world number one Rafael Nadal (7-5, 3-6, 6-2). In the first round he won against world number 23 Tomas Berdych from the Czech Republic (4:6, 6:3, 6:4).

In 2008 Dimitrov won the junior titles at Wimbledon and the US Open.
