A man who used a pistol and a bomb threat to hijack a Sofia-Varna bus, demanding to speak to the media and to the man allegedly responsible for a road accident in which the hijacker's girlfriend allegedly miscarried, surrendered to police about three hours after the drama began.
Sofia city hall said on January 14 that police who took action to cut short a protest outside Parliament had been enforcing an order by Sofia municipality issued after a bomb warning.The protest drew more than 1000 people. It had been scheduled to start at 11am and end at 5pm, but at 1pm riot police in full protective gear dispersed the protesters, in some cases using force to do so.
Two blasts went off almost simultaneously in bars in Sofia on the evening of September 7 2008, injuring six people, including a pregnant woman. I walk past here twice a day to work and back and it has always been in the back of my mind that it's only a matter of time before something like this happens. In the evenings the flash cars are double or even triple parked outside even though this is the heart of Sofia, right next to Alexander Nevsky Cathedral and parking is banned. If a bomb does go off here a lot of children could be hurt - it's right next door to the Alliance language school where dozens of children take private lessons. It doesn't bear thinking about.
