Foreign ministry in Athens cautions Greeks about travel to Macedonia

CAMPAIGN: Supporters of ruling party VMRO wave flags during the first electoral rally, in Ohrid, about 160km west of Skopje, on March 2, 2009. Macedonia's presidential and parliamentary elections will be held on March 22.

A March 1 2009 incident in which Greek tourists visiting Ohrid were attacked and their buses spray-painted with slogans has prompted Athens to caution against visiting the neighbouring country, and it has blamed such incidents on what it described as Skopje's anti-Greek campaign.

The attack occurred on as the tourists were returning from a sightseeing visit to their coaches which had been spray-painted with the words "Macedonia," "United Macedonia" and "Alexander the Great." The vandals hurled sticks and stones, damaging one of the coaches and slightly injuring two tourists, Athens-based daily Kathimerini said.

On March 2, the Greek foreign ministry issued a statement saying: "We condemn in the strongest manner the incident involving an organised attack by unknown persons on Greek visitors and their property".

"Such acts, which unfortunately impair communication between peoples, are the visible results of the nationalism and the intolerance aimed at Greece and consciously cultivated in Skopje of late," the foreign ministry said.

Athens called on Skopje to protect Greek citizens who visited their country and asked that they arrest and punish those responsible for the March 1 attack.

The two countries are locked in a prolonged standoff over the use of the name Macedonia. Greece calls it the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, rejecting Skopje's use of the name as historically inappropriate and as a potential device to push territorial claims.

The dispute, which has defied UN-brokered attempts to resolve it, has led Greece to block Macedonia's Nato aspirations and to say that it will stop it getting into the European Union until the row is resolved. The name dispute is expected to be a key issue in the March 22 presidential and local elections in Macedonia.

On March 3, the Greek foreign ministry issued a further statement, saying that Greek citizens who wanted to travel to the neighbouring country "whether for a stay or in transit, for professional or personal reasons - that they may experience problems".

The reasons included the "negative climate that has been created with regard to our country during the past year has provoked the abuse of persons - usually drivers -
and attacks on and damage to cars with Greek licence plates".

The ministry said that local legislation and procedural regulations, including those regarding customs, taxation, transit hauling, leaving the country with more than 2000 euro in foreign currency unless properly declared on entry, and traffic regulations, were "very strictly enforced by the authorities in FYROM with regard  to Greek citizens, in blatant abuse of authority and with disproportionate consequences".

Greek citizens should fully acquaint themselves with these regulations, comply with them fully and "mainly, to exercise caution and prudence regarding their safety and that of their property during their stay in, or journey through, FYROM," the ministry said.

Kathimerini said that mayor of Ohrid sent a letter to Greece's representative office in Skopje, saying, "We in Ohrid do not discriminate among visitors to our city - everyone is welcome".

The Republic of Macedonia shall conquer and subdue Albania, Aegean Macedonia and especially you Bulgarians. Macedonian DNA is the oldest in the world and proves we are superior to all of the Balkans and the rest of the world. We do not speak Bulgarian but the Macedonian language which is the oldest in the world much older than Welsh or Greek. It's time that you all accept the reality of a United and Great Macedonia with Solun as the capital.

I did say "were forbidden" and not "are forbidden". The years I am referring to are 1945-1960 onwards, in the area of what was then called "Northern Greece" and now called "(Greek) Macedonia". There have been enough postings on this and allied sites by local people affected by this local Greek language ban to make my point; I am relatively lucky in that as a Brit I can use Welsh or English (or French) as best suits my purpose, without any UK national "guidance" (= compulsion) on which language I use and when I use it.

Boris, are you for real? Not long ago, you said that Alexander the Great was Greek, now you are saying he was Albanian and spoke Albanian. Are you the same historian I told you know nothing about history? My assumptions were right on!Not only you are nor a historian, but you dont know your own mother. We the Macedonians know who we are.Our ethnicity is Macedonian by tribe,by blood and by DNA.The highest DNA match to the ancient Macedonians are the Macedonians from the Republic of Macedonia and Macedonians under Greek occupation and Macedonians in Bulgaria.Bulgarians, Albanians and Greeks do not match the DNA with our ancient macedonians,do you get it?You people are realy pathetic,I feel sorry for you for not being able to come to termes with your real mixed DNA.You fooles, you are Arvanoturki, there cannot be anything else. There is no connection to the ancient Hellens. The only way you are connected is by mythology, and that is why you have been cloned to Greeks, not because you are.In order to keep the mixture together the Albanians,Vlahs,Roma,Turks and Macedonians they cloned you to pseudo Greeks. You can argue till the cows fly,you cannot chage the facts of history.

to Spa 05 akw - and you lot aren't ancient Greeks either, any more that today's Macedonians are ancient Macedonians ! Life moves on and populations change over the
centuries and millenia. This has affected Greece as much as any other European country, with population movements of Vlachs, Roma, Albanians, and Turks (especially in 1924-26) in and out of today's Greek boundaries, quite apart from ethnic Macedonians who
were forbidden to use their own language on Greek territory (a bit fascist, that !) It might be a bit unfair to refer to today's Greek population as "Arvanoturkia", as some do, but one can see why they do it.

Macedonia was always a PROVINCE, and you speak Bulgarian - Macedonian oldest in the world? Hahahahahahahahaha.....
There exist NO Macedonian language, but BULGARIAN. You speak Bulgarian dialect, Morons.

•In A short life of Climent by Dimiter Homatian (Archbishop of Ohrid from 1216 to about 1234) we can read following: “On this same day, June 27, in memory of our saintly Archbishop and miracle working Climent, Bishop of Bulgaria in Ohrid […] This great priest and enlightener of Bulgaria was a native of European Moesia, the people of which are usually known to be Bulgarians […] First, along with godlike Naum, Angelari and Ghoasd, he zealously studied the Holy Bible, which had been translated by God´s help into the local dialect by Cyril, a truly godly man and like the Apostles. From the beginning Climent had been with Methodius, the famous teacher of devotion to God and the Orthodox faith of the Moesian people. In this way, obeying the divine law from his youth and living righteously, exactly according to the Gospels, he finally became an adherent of the Christian leaders and the leader in Christian devotion of the whole Moesian people, bearing the same trials as the priest and the teachers – trials inflicted by the heretics […] Climent was raised to the bishop´s throne when Methodius made him the bishop of the whole of Illyria and of the Bulgarian people, who were predominant in the country […] and when he had made known his apostolic service and the growth of the talent which he was gifted to Adrian, then the Pope of ancient Rome and when Methodius was made the archbishop of the whole of Moravia and Bulgaria by the same Pope. Most often he stayed in the Illyrian city of Lichnida, which was the centre for the surrounding cities and which is today called Ohrid in the language of the Moesians, or in Cephalonia, translated into the Bulgarian language Glavinitsa, where he left monuments. In this city of Lichnida he built sacred temples […] He left us these monuments and holy books in Ohrid – his own works…”

Comment: European Moesia, that is Bulgaria. Ohrid lies in Macedonia (Today´s F.Y.R.O.M) Hence it says “the Archbishop of the whole of Moravia and Bulgaria” – It does NOT say “of Moravia and Macedonia”.

According to MARGINALIA AND POSTSCRIPTS (The postscripts to the Old Bulgarian translation of the Life of Antonius the Great, written at the end of the 9th century and the beginning of the 10th) we can read following: “… as I finished the translation of the work by Anastasius the Great on the life of Our Great Father Antonius, I would like to have […] Joan, who followed Antonius´s Life. We were requested to translate by the church builder Joan, our master, Archbishop of the Bulgarian lands. And we were asked to translate not only the Life of Antonius but also the Life of the famous miracle-working disciple of Peter, Pancratius, because it had not been translated by anyone before us. When I thought it out, I decided to overcome our crudeness and inexperience and not to leave the Slav people deprived of the divine ´Lives` of these miracle-workers.

Comment: Hence it is called Old Bulgarian – not Old Macedonian!!!

According to Gregorius, the Presbyter´s marginalia to the translation of the Old Testament (end of the 9th century and beginning of the 10th): “Books […] They have been translated from the Greek into the Slavonic language in the time of the Royal Prince Simeon, the son of Boris, by Gregorius, the Presbyter, churchman of all the Bulgarian churches. These books have been translated by order of the princely booklover Simeon, quite rightly called lover of God”.

Comment: Hence it says “all Bulgarian churches” – not Macedonian!

Furthermore, Boris and Simeon were Bulgarian Kings – NOT Macedonian!

According to Marginalia to the translation of “Words against the Arians” by Anastasius of Alexandria (907): “Jesus Christ, Son of God, be victorious! These devout books, called Atanasius, have been translated by the orders of our Bulgarian Prince Simeon from the Greek language […] by the Bishop Constanin, who was a disciple of Methodius, the Moravian Archbishop, in the year 6414 (906) from the beginning of the world. And they were written at the same Prince Toudor´s orders by the monk Black Shirt Descov at the mouth of the River Ticha, where the same Prince Toudor built a beautiful, holy, new, gold church in the year 6415 (907) indict 14. In the same year, on the second day of May, Saturday evening, the father of this Prince died – God´s servant, our highminded and pious Bulgarian Prince, called Boris, which Christian name was Michael”.

Comment: It is said “our highminded and pious Bulgarian Prince” – It is NOT said “our Macedonian Prince”.

According to an Italian Legend written by Father Guaderin in the 10th century: “In the time when the Emperor Michail ruled the Empire of the New Rom, there lived a man of noble birth, named Constantin […] Called philosopher […] The Emperor granted him his request and asked the same above-mentioned Pholosopher to come to him, and he sent him with his brother Methodius to the lands of the Slavs…”

Comment: Constantine, that is “Cyrillos”. Cyril was of Moesian origin, as the text witness´s, born in Thessalonica which was also populated by Bulgarians.

According to Chernorizets Hrabar (The Brave), an Old Bulgarian man of letters who was writing at the end of the 9th century and the beginning of the 10th century we can read the following: “Then the Slavs had no books, and being pagans, they divined the future by lines and strokes. When they were christened they were forced to write with Latin and Greek letters […] But Saint Constantin, called, Cyril, translated the Slavonic books alone…”

What on earth is wrong with being a "Slav" ? This seems to be some sort of hate-word from the Greek / Hellenic side, but in Northern Europe it has a positive connotation. The word "Slav" comes from the old Slavonic for "word" (Slovo), meaning those who understood the speech, and the other word "Niemiets" (for "German") means someone who did not understand the speech (nie= no, and miets = having/speaking). In today's Slavonic languages the word "slava" means "glory". I fear the Greeks will cast themselves into a tiny little linguistic microcosm (now there's a good Greek word !) of their own,
rejecting their neighbours speaking Slavonic, Albanian, Roma, and Turkish languages, and not being very good at speaking/writing English either.
As Virgil said "Timeo Danaos et dona ferentes", but he didn't use Greek to express this thought.

So many nusty words and hatred, I really do not understand what makes people be so hostile and offensive to each other. I am Greek and married to a Bulgarian happily for the last 10 years and have two lovely kids. My kids love both countries the same way. The expressions described in this blog are not part of us AND WE REPRESENT THE MAJORITY OF THE PEOPLE. There is not any more MEGALI IDEA to the majority of the Greeks, and I did not see any territorial aspiration or any form of extremism in any of the normal people of Bulgaria, Fyrom or Albania (with exception perhaps of Serbia). Those Peter and Mac and NIX who make their ridiculous selves exposed to this blog ashaming their country and their people are MENTALLY RETARDED and should be treated like that. And for those Greeks who respond or think along the same line, SIMILAR treatment should be considered. We are all, in the Balcans, traumatized from ghosts from the past who have been introduced to us through our schools and nationalistic education. What we need is to listen to each other, understand our differences and make a laugh on any or all of these ridiculous claims from wherever they come and move on with life. Some ouzo with meze will definitely help!

MUST BE TAUGHT TO YOUNG KIDS: PATRIOTISM versus NATIONALISM.The French have a say when they mention "women versus men":"Vive la difference!"(long live variety translated in English) Let's do it for the sake of our kids. Then SERENITY will come ,and we will find that we all have a lot in common;my philosophy & hope I did not fall on dead ears only....Thanks!

I am wondering why all the Balkans, including Turkey, Bulgaria and Romania (the last 2 in the EU) don't decide to become part of the Greek territory and game over.

During the last 120 years the Greek megalomania and expansionist policy successfully renamed the Thracian territories of Bulgaria, part of Turkey and all Southern part of Macedonia, expelled and ethnically cleansed them from any other than "Greek" nationals and prohibited to its citizens North of Thessaloníki to speak any other language than Greek.

I believe that there are only 2 solutions: or we all become Greeks or we all stand up to Greece on the international scene and stop its territorial and ethnical claims.

P.J.

Megali Idea was a policy of uniting Greek populated territories out of the crumbling Ottoman Empire, but this ended in 1922 when Greeks from Turkey, left for Greece under the population exchange. FYROM nationalism on the other hand makes territorial, and historical claims TODAY. Identity theft is another name for it, and that is illegal in most countries. Greece, the primary investor in the region has aimed to help develop FYROM's economy so you may one day enter the developed world. But if you insist on biting the hand that helps you, then your only harming your own interests. Greece has nothing to gain from FYROM, but FYROM has alot to gain from Greek capital and projects. From your theory, one can only assume that King Otto was able to "create" Greeks in Russia, France, Britain, Austria, America, and in the remaining parts of the Ottoman Empire, this includes Greeks alive prior to his birth. Not to mention free Greece, were his popularity was so low that it forced him into exile. This anti-Greek propaganda, is what is causing friction in the Balkans, and depriving FYROM from its prosperous future in the EU. Its your choice.

Our ancestors defined being Greek as anyone who accepted the ideals of rule of law, fairness and democracy. As such we are all Greeks! Now, lets get along.
