FA Cup Sixth Round: Coventry v Chelsea

FA Cup Sixth Round: Coventry v Chelsea

Coventry will host the sixth round of the FA Cup London rich boys Chelsea at Ricoh Arena. If statistics are taken into consideration, then the difference in class and stature between the two sides is vast. Chelsea are second in the Premiership and have recently vowed not to let go off the title race and to push United to the edge.

Coventry meanwhile, are currently 13th in the Championship, having bagged 47 points, dead in the middle of the table. They are nine points away from sixth-placed Preston who are in the promotion play-off slots, and 10 points above Southampton who are in the relegation zone.

Chelsea are clearly the favourites, but if history is anything to go by, the FA Cup has a tradition of small teams scalping big ones, so anything is possible.

Should Chris Coleman's Coventry want to taste the atmosphere of the semi final, they will have to dump four time FA Cup winners Chelsea, preferably at Ricoh Arena. Coventry have one glorious stint with this competition, 12 years ago when they lifted the FA Cup in 1987.

City claimed one Premiership scalp already, that of  Blackburn. Rovers were disposed of in the fifth round replay. Coventry will now have to emulate  against another, albeit, a bigger Premiership outfit.

Chelsea do have bigger fish to fry as they are now second in the table, gunning for the title, seven points behind leaders United and level with Liverpool. They also have a heavy Champions League trip to Juventus on Tuesday.  Should Chelsea dispatch the Sky Blues, this would be their 18th semi final.

The Sky Blues have scored six goals on this cup run, courtesy of five different scorers, with only Leon Best having scored two goals. The West Midlands club have kept clean sheets in three of their four matches.

Chelsea have netted 11 times in the current cup run, of which Nicolas Anelka has accounted for four goals including a hat-trick against Watford in the last round. German international  Michael Ballack scored three and a brace each  for Salomon Kalou and Frank Lampard.

Meanwhile Chelsea's Ashley Cole has apologised for his behaviour after he repeatedly swore at police officers while being detained.

"I would like to take this opportunity to apologise to the police officers on duty last night for my language.

"I fully appreciate that whatever frustrations I may have had with others that it was completely inappropriate to vent those in conversations with the police.

"However, I do want to make clear that I swore in frustration at the paparazzi's behaviour. I would never disrespect police officers in any way," he said.
