Hotel prices in the Black sea region are set to fall by 20 per cent, according to Bulgarian news agency Focus, quoting the manager of Varna's tourist chamber, Gesho Lyubenov, on March 6 2009.

According to Lyubenov, all tour operators, hotel owners and companies offering transportation services have lowered their prices from 10 to 22 per cent. A one-night stay at a four-star hotel in Slunchev Bryag (Sunny Beach) or Zlatni Pyasutsi (Golden Sands), traditionally the two most expensive seaside resorts, would now cost between 10 and 12 euro during May and June.

A holiday package for one person would range between 90 and 120 euro, Lyubenov said, without specifying the duration of the stay.

He referred to Turkey, Greece, Cyprus and Spain, countries undertaking various initiatives to keep their tourist industries alive, including shortening the process for issuing visas to one day.

Bulgaria would heavily rely on Russian tourists for the summer season, Lyubenov said. "Many of our partners offer charter flights to Bulgaria, which is crucial if you aim to sell tickets up to the last moment. This, however, is also related to the issuing of visas. If the state heeded all the steps we propose, more than 150 million euro could flow into the country," Lyubenov said.

Inappropriate comment?

Decrease of prices does not affect the Scandinavian tourists with travel agents already locked their prices in summer 2009.
Sweden has seen its currency weaken by 22% against the Bulgarian Lev (BGN), and Sunny Beach lost big last summer.
If there is anything we want, it is that hotels improve their service by 20% and breakfast by 40%.

20% reduction in price is fine but, looking at the photo accompanying this article, I would say that most people would prefer a 20% increase in personal space!
