FA Cup Sixth Round: Chelsea through to semis after dispatching Coventry

Full to capacity Ricoh Arena and its raucous support were not enough to propel Coventry through to the semifinals. The fairytale for the Championship side to claim a Premiership scalp, and that of Chelsea in particular was never going to materialise with almost full Chelsea superiority on the pitch.

Hesitant Coventry defending allowed Didier Drogba to score the first goal for Chelsea after 14 minutes  when he stole the ball from Scott Dann and slotted it in the net putting the hosts one nil down at the beginning. Chelsea then wrapped things up in the 71st minute of the second half when Alex scored the second after intercepting a Ricardo Quaresma brilliant cross in a sudden Chelsea counter attack.

After the Londoners opened the score at the beginning, Coventry worked hard to find an equaliser but they did not really trouble the Chelsea back four. There weren't any clear chances for them as the Blue's defence and midfield we were organised, efficient and the difference of class was apparent. Chelsea were on top of the match from the beginning until the end.  .

Didier Drogba has been on fire since the arrival of the new manager at Stamford Bridge, having scored three goals in the last five games that Chelsea have played so far under the Dutchman and won all of them. Hiddink used Drogba in the match as a sole striker, and apart from opening the account for the Blues, Drogba was rampant the entire match (until he was subbed in the 80th minute by Di Santo) and constantly harassing the hosts' defence.

The visiting team maintained their superiority throughout the second half. Chelsea's second goal from a set piece, when Hiddink's side broke quickly and Quaresma's searching ball was easily converted by the unmarked Alex.

Chelsea manager Hiddink will be delighted to have maintained his 100 per cent  winning record since his arrival at the Bridge. Moreover, good news for the team and the supporters in general was the arrival of Michael Essien in play in the second half replacing Mikel, as this was his first  appearance after over six months out with a knee ligament injury

Coventry City boss Chris Coleman said in an interview after the proceedings that he was extremely proud of his players who had given everything out of themselves at the packed Ricoh Arena. He said, as quoted by the clubs website:

"I am very proud of my players, yes the result is disappointing but I thought they applied themselves extremely well. This was the biggest game for the club at this new stadium, but we need to move on. It is going to be difficult against Bristol City [In the Championship] on Tuesday, but we've got to get back on it. We will have to get back to reality."
