Industrial output shrinks by 19 per cent in just one month

Industrial manufacturing output in Bulgaria shrunk by 19 per cent in January 2009, as opposed to December 2008. The fall was revealed in preliminary data released by the National Statistics Institute (NSI), Dnevnik daily reports.

The figures for Bulgarian industry are mostly contingent on results in the manufacturing sector, which dropped substantially in January by a staggering 21.4 per cent. The main fall is recorded in the production of metal products (excluding machinery and appliances). Metal output decreased by 66.5 per cent, whereas the output of non-metal mineral resources fell by 42.1 per cent.

Appliances and equipment manufacturing in Bulgaria fell by 25.7 percent.

The pharmaceutical sector, on the other hand, defied the trend, recording a 211.2 per cent rise in production. Foodstuff production also rose by 24.8 per cent, and foundries producing metal products registered a 20.6 per cent increase.

Manufacturing in all sectors in January 2009 fell 13.3 per cent on the same month the previous year. Energy production also dropped by 7.6 per cent, whereas capital invstment fell by 35.8 per cent.
