Small Bulgarian town to invest in solar energy for street lighting

The north-Bulgarian town of Kaynardzha in the Silistra region announced it would develop a number of projects for the introduction of renewable energy, including a street light system powered by solar energy, Bulgarian news agency BTA said.

Deputy mayor Dafinka Staneva said the municipality planned to apply for European funding under the Regional Development Programme 2007-2013 for the development of the street light system.

Staneva said the municipality was currently discussing the feasibility of a joint project with the Romanian municipality of Lipniţa to use biomass and municipal solid waste for the production of synthetic oil, electricity and heat.

No dates as to when any of the projects would start were given.
