Over 1 million uninsured burden Bulgarian healthcare budget - trade unions

Wed, Mar 25 2009 10:15 CET 1118 Views
Because of the global financial crisis, 40 000 people were said to have stopped paying their social security and healthcare contributions, bringing the total number of uninsured to over a million, Ivan Kokalov, head of the health federation at the Confederation of Independent Trade Unions in Bulgaria (CITUB) said.

Most employees used to insure themselves, he said.

Threatment of the uninsured was a burden on the healthcare system, Dimitar Dimitrov, chairman of the healthcare employers’ association said. Their treatment was paid for by doctors as the costs were deduced from their salaries, Dimitrov said.

The growing number of uninsured had reduced healthcare contribution receipts, with only 90 million leva collected by the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) in January 2009, according to Kokalov.

According to Dimitrov, the Bulgarian healthcare system was a hotchpotch of German, British and American models.
