A three-week neutering programme for stray dogs and cats started in the Targovishte municipality. The programme was a cooperation between the Four Paws NGO and the municipality of Targovishte, Bulgarian news agency BTA said.

Besides neutering, the street dogs and cats would be vaccinated against rabies by a team of experts from the foundation. Afterwards, the animals would be released in the same location where they had been captured, the foundation said.

The foundation said it would also offer free rabies vaccination for pets.

The operations were performed in a mobile operation unit of the organisation, which had been brought over especially for the project from Switzerland, the organisation said.
Until April 10 the unit would be placed near the central bus station in Targovishte.

Four Paws also announced it would neuter pet dogs and cats for free for owners who could not afford to pay for the operation.

A side-effect of having their pet neutered was that owners would not have to pay taxes on the pets, the foundation said.

That is a three-week campaign, but not a programme. Probale number of kept cats and dogs is near 6,000 - practically all unsterilized.
