Pleading illness has become an easy way to postpone a trial
Former interior minister Roumen Petkov has been accused of applying pressure on a witness to testify against the Marinov brothers - Krassimir and Nikolai. Evelin "Brendo" Banev told Nova Televisia on October 9 2008 that Petkov wanted him to testify in the case against the Marinov brothers who are charged with conspiring to murder three people.
Prosecution would interrogate alleged crime bosses Mladen Mihalev, aka Madjo, as well as Krasimir Marinov and Nikolai Marinov, aka the Margin brothers, in relation to the murder of Georgi Stoev on April 7 2008, Sofia prosecutor Nikolai Kokinov told Bulgarian National Television (BNT) on April 8. On December 3, Sofia City Court put the case against the brothers Nikolay and Krasimir Marinov, nicknamed the Big and the Small Margins, and five other defendants on hold for an unknown period of time. The five co-defendants were the brothers Ivo and Svetlin Karageorgiev, Biser Iliev, Stefan Rangelov and Veselin Toshev. The deteriorating health of Ivo Karageorgiev was given as the motivation behind the dismissal of the case. Karageorgiev had heart-problems and urgently needed an operation, medical examination showed. Specialists however said the condition had existed for years, and they could not understand why the operation hadn't happened earlier, Dnevnik daily said.
