Slovakia's ruling coalition of socialists and nationalist got a boost when its backing for incumbent president Ivan Gasparovic was translated into a decisive victory in the country's presidential run-off elections on April 4 2009.

Gasparovic got about 55.55 per cent of the votes, Slovakia's central election commission said on April 5, defeating centre-right rival Iveta Radicova to win a second five-year term.

The Gasparovic victory was widely seen as a victory for prime minister Robert Fico.

"The Slovak citizens respect me and I didn't disappoint them, that's what decided the election," Gasparovic told a news conference.

Voter turnout was more than 51 per cent of Slovakia's about four million registered voters.

The support for Radicova, the first woman to reach a presidential election run-off in Slovakia, is seen as a boost for her future political career.
