In an attempt to prevent a strike by public transport drivers, Sofia will pay five per cent more to municipal transport firms Stolichen Avtotransport and Stolichen Elektrotransport.

Talks on the upward revision began in February and mark the second increase since January, when drivers threatening to come out on strike got higher wages.

As of April, employees at Stolichen Avtotransport, which runs the busses and trolley busses in the city, will receive 2.68 leva a km ran, while Stolichen Elektrotransport, which operates the trams, will pay its drivers 3.54 leva a km.

Despite the increase, wages at city hall transport firms still remain lower than in the private carriers operating public transport routes, who get between 2.76 and 2.92 a km, peaking at 3.56 leva for Karat S transport company.
