Glimpses of Bulgaria's Black Sea

APRIL 2009: A seaside scene at Sozopol on Bulgaria's southern Black Sea coast.

Photo: Georgi Kozhuharov

The gallery of five photographs above is from a wide range taken by Economedia staff photographer Georgi Kozhuharov on a recent trip to Bulgaria's Black Sea coastline, ahead of the summer season.

The collection is a snapshot, literally, of some of the developments that have been the source of controversy about over-construction, along with shortcomings in infrastructure to cope with the changes along the coastline.

It appears that, in line with media reports of statements from tourism and other authorities, in some areas there seems to be a halt to construction of some developments as the financial and economic crisis produces fallout in Bulgaria.

we are fortunate to live in Budjaka
area of sozopol unfortunately the
roads are a big dissapointment
they are a river of mud in winter
and a dust cloud in summer, with
craters that would stop a
mountaineer. that apart life's ok

Who want an nice apartment that has no road or pavement in or around it? People don't want to walk through mud and dirt when they leave their property.
Do something now before its too late!

That`s great, but what about the alleys and the lighting fixtures. It looks bad with all that mud. The Windmill Palms would look great.

I appeal to the 20% of positive/constructive thinkers to join me in finding a solution to the problems, without the energy and time wasting excecise of judging and blaming. Embrace challenges, adapt, adopt and be flexible enough to bend with the winds of change that is sweeping our new world in which we are so unprepared and ill equiped to deal with. We need clear calm thinking coupled with bold and brave, fearless and decisive action.

dear just_a_nobody

it seems that your economic background is not that fundamental, that for sure also applies for those people who developed these projects and those who approved them.

it does not hurt to learn from others and/or the past...

Any economic development is good for the country at this point... sea side or not. It's also important that these projects get finished!

I hate to see the development that has taken place in and around Sozopol since my first visit back in the early 1990s, the town has lost much of it's charm. 10+ years ago a trip along the southern Black Sea coastline to the Turkish frontier was an adventure, now it is a common tourist destination.

The tourist industry in Bulgaria will take a really big hit this summer. And the mafia people who run the show at the Black Sea resorts deserve to suffer and take all losses. Bastards! They have buried the beautiful country!!!

it would seem that the once beautiful cherno more coastline continues to be massacred by ruthless constructers and blind authorities....remember what happened to spain....the disaterous algarve developments in portugal. one should always try to learn from other peoples mistakes

hmmm... looks like a place where someone can really find some recreation...

some people prefer vacation on a farm, some in the mountains, some on the seaside, but maybe there are some who prefer to do vacation on a construction site.. maybe this is a niche market where they can focus on... it is called market segmentation ! :-(
