Bulgaria's jobless rate increased to 6.88 per cent in March, up from 6.69 per cent a month earlier, the Labour and Social Policy Ministry said on April 16.

With more seasonal work available, 18 000 unemployed people found a job in March, but the number of registered people without jobs still increased to 254 900 people.

Bulgaria still remains below the European Union average unemployment, which was 7.9 per cent in February. The bloc's statistics office Eurostat is due to publish March figures on April 30.

The peak of unemployment in Bulgaria in 2009 will be in May and June and the tendency is likely to persist to the end of the year, Krassen Yotov, an economist with Industry Watch, told Bulgarian news agency Focus earlier this month.

Yotov said that unemployment would increase more rapidly over the first half of the year and in the second half of the year, the number of jobless people would continue to go up, but at a lower rate.
