Human trafficking - four Bulgarians apprehended in Greece

Four Bulgarian citizens were arrested in northern Greece on suspicion of human trafficking, according to Greek daily Eleftherotypia, as quoted by Bulgarian news agency BTA.

The four suspects had attempted to sell a 34-year-old Bulgarian woman for 2000 euro to undercover members of the Greek police in the town of Kilkis. The undercover officers had presented themselves as owners of night clubs.

The rendezvous where the exchange was scheduled to occur early on the morning of April 15 was a junction on the Kilkis – Neo Petrici road, near the Bulgarian border.

The apprehended Bulgarians, aged between 25 and 34, are most likely members of an established human-trafficking ring operating between Bulgaria and Greece that sells women for sexual exploitation, BTA said.

The Bulgarians will face several criminal charges, including human trafficking and sexual exploitation.

There needs to be this cooperation between Bulgaria and neighboring countries to put an end to this.
This human trafficking has to end. If the women are selling themselves, thats one thing. If there is someone else selling them...thats where the bigger issues is and what should be focused on. The arrest of these pimps and hustlers need to take place.
Aressting these women really is not the answer. For every one aressted, 5 more replace her. This is a very organized criminal enterprise. It has been going on for years and is not going to stop over night. The EU should help......since Bulgaria is part of the Union.

What if this were happening in London? I bet they have a special unit of police for this kind of stuff!!!!

Bulgaria improving in fight against people trafficking - US state dept

Bulgaria does not fully comply with the minimum standards for the elimination of people trafficking but is making significant efforts to do so, according to the United States state department 2008 report to congress on people trafficking. The report, released on June 8, classified Bulgaria as a "tier 2" country, ranking below tier 1 countries that fully comply but above countries classified as failing to make significant efforts.

Human trafficking: an increasing problem requiring a joint effort

One of the main results of human trafficking is the volition of women's rights. Domestic abuse, lack of employment and lower wages are among some of the factors that push women into this situation. However, the traffickers are becoming more and more sophisticated and the general idea that victims are poorly educated, and of low social and financial standing, is already a myth. Many girls from well-off families, that have attended good schools, become involved in the trade. That your daughter has not become a victim of the traffickers does not necessarily mean she is not "at risk", maybe it is just that no one has tried to involve her yet. Human trafficking is a common crime that needs a combined effort - in the form of international, cross-border, cross-organisational and multidisciplinary co-operation.

ROUND TABLE IN SOFIA DISCUSSES PROSTITUTION IN THE CONTEXT OF HUMAN TRAFFICKING

Most common opinion in Bulgaria was that prostitution should not be legalised, Deputy Prosecutor-General Hristo Manchev said in his opening speech at a round table discussion on pros and cons of prostitution legalisation in Bulgaria in the context of human trafficking, organised by the National Commission for Combating Trafficking in Human. Legalisation or criminalisation of prostitution had moral, economic and juridical aspects and was related to feelings of moral, honour and duty of society towards people involved in prostitution, Manchev said as quoted by mediapool.bg. By declaring himself against prostitution, Manchev "officially entered the Interior Ministry choir, which has been following that refrain for several months," mediapool.bg commented.
