Earthquake prediction could spell legal trouble for Bulgarian astrologist

Sat, Apr 18 2009 09:47 CET 2019 Views 3 Comments
Prosecutors and lawyers in the central Bulgarian town of Haskovo considered suing local astrologist Emil Leshtanski for deliberately causing panic among the population, Bulgarian media said on April 17 2009.

For several days now, Leshtanski has been predicting that a strong earthquake will hit the town at exactly 4am on April 19 2009, Easter Sunday. Having in mind the devastating earthquake which claimed several hundred lives earlier this month in Italy, many people in Haskovo started panicking, Bulgarian National Television (BNT) said.

Leshtanski has been making his claim based on his own calculations as a result of his work in observing planets and stars. Geologists, however, have been saying that no one can predict exactly when an earthquake will hit and have been trying to calm passions down in Haskovo.

When asked by BNT why he was making his claims Leshtanski said: "If you had such a vital information about something that can damage people’s life, would you hide it from them".

So far the only people who have profited from the situation are the local insurance companies who have never experienced such a boom in housing insurances.
