A total of 252 people have failed to declare income taxes on more than 21 300 000 leva in 2008, the National Revenue Agency was quoted by Bulgaria Focus news agency on April 28 2009.

The unpaid taxes amounted to 3 200 000 leva. Most of the 252 people were checked after tax authorities found discrepancies between their properties and their declared incomes.

Checks also established that many Bulgarians paid their mandatory social contributions based on the minimum income stipulated by law for their profession, while at the same time owning properties worth hundreds of thousands of leva.

Residents of the central city of Stara Zagora accounted for most of the undeclared taxes in 2008 – 431 000 leva. Next was another central Bulgarian city, Veliko Turnovo, where people owed 328 000 leva, Dobrich with 256 000 leva, Pleven with 230 000 leva and the Black Sea city of Varna with 193 000 leva.
