Elections for Bulgarian Parliament scheduled for July 5 2009

All but one of the parties in Parliament agree on the date after holding consultations with President Georgi Purvanov.

President Georgi Purvanov will issue a decree scheduling the elections for Bulgarian Parliament for July 5 2009, the Presidency office said on April 28 2009 after Purvanov held consultations with all political parties represented in the current Parliament.

Only the right-wing party in opposition, the Democrats for a Strong Bulgaria, supported the idea of holding the elections on June 28 2009.

According to the Election Act the campaign for the elections will last 21 days. A controversial change to the Elections Act adopted on April 14 raised the threshold that political coalitions will have to pass in the elections from four to eight per cent.

Another radical change stipulates that 31 out of the 240 MPs will be elected by majority vote. On June 7 Bulgarians will vote for their members of the European Parliament. Campaigning for these elections will start on May 17 2009.
