Champions League Semi-final: Chelsea v Barcelona

Barcelona's manager Josep Guardiola watches during a training session at Stamford Bridge in London May 5

Stamford Bridge will witness an epic clash on Wednesday, May 6, which, unlike the first leg from last week, is certain to produce goals. The 0-0 draw in Spain meant that Chelsea did what no other team was capable of doing this season – thwart Barca from scoring a goal on their own turf. But they accomplished something else as well: Chelsea generated massive flak for their defensive approach and unattractive style of play. To that of course, the logical retort always is and will be, the end justifies the means.

The Catalans increased the pressure just before the fixture by dispatching their domestic arch-rivals Real Madrid 6-2 on Saturday. This should have Chelsea worried a little, but Dutch manager Guus Hiddink refuses to be intimidated by the impressive scoreline.

"Their 6-2 win was a respectable performance," said Hiddink, as quoted by the BBC. "But every game is different.

"Having scored six, it gives them a tremendous boost but, I think this game will be different."

Ever since the end of the first leg last week, the Barcelona camp, media and supporters have complained thats Chelsea's defensive tactics ruined the match and that some of the challenges that were allowed to pass by the referee should have been penalised. One thing is certain, the Londoners will have to open up their game, as they need to score a goal in order to proceed. This in turn will present Barca with an opportunity to hit them on the counter offensive, as both teams would be smart to avoid the Russian roulette of a penalty shootout.

It is possible that Hiddink will leave Nicolas Anelka on the substitutes' bench for the Champions League semi-final second leg's kick off, however, the Frenchman is definite to be in the squad. Michael Ballack is also likely to return to action after being rested, most likely in the starting eleven. Meanwhile, Ashley Cole is back after he was sidelined with a ban during the first leg.

Former Arsenal striker and current Barca ace, Thierry Henry, reportedly missed the training session on Monday with a knee problem and is most likely going to be sidelined for the encounter at the Bridge. Furthermore, the visitors will be without  the suspended Carles Puyol and the injured Rafael Marquez.
