Police detain 10 suspected drug traffickers

Bulgarian police

The authorities in Sofia and the southwestern town of Kyustendil have apprehended 10 drug traffickers in a dual police operation that was executed simultaneously overnight, in the early hours on June 1 2009. In total, more than 20 houses were searched in the operation, said Interior Minister Mihail Mihov, as quoted by Dnevnik daily.

The arrested men are perceived to be subordinates of drug lord Hristoforos Amanatidis – Taki. Meanwhile Darik Radio has reported that some of the detainees belong to a Levski Sofia firm.

Police maintain that most of the arrested are "known culprits with famous nicknames, with a history of drug trafficking", Dnevnik has reported.

During the search operation, large quantities of drugs, cocaine and marijuana, as well as mobile phones, scales and counterfeit US dollars were seized, Sportal.bg has reported.

According to Mihov, during the operation, one of the suspects resisted arrest. This resulted in him being wounded by the officers. His injury is not perceived as life-threatening.

All 10 suspects will be detained for 24 hours, while a case is prepared against them.
