Manchester United accept Real offer for Cristiano Ronaldo

Manchester United accept Real offer for Cristiano Ronaldo

Ronaldo, left, came close to leaving United last summer, but reportedly changed his mind after Alex Ferguson, right, asked the winger to stay one more season and give the club the chance go repeat as Champions League winners. United lost the final to Barcelona in May 2009.

Cristano Ronaldo was given permission to negotiate personal terms and wages with Spanish giants Real Madrid, after Manchester United bowed down after relentless flirtation with their star winger and accepted a whopping offer of 80 million pounds sterling, or 93.8 million euro.

"At Cristiano's request – who has again expressed his desire to leave – and after discussion with the player's representatives, United have agreed to give Real Madrid permission to talk to the player," Manchester United’s website have confirmed.

Comprehensively beaten by bitter rivals Barcelona this year, who secured the first ever treble by a Spanish team - winning the league, cup and Champions League - Real's new president Florentino Perez is keen to boost the club's squad to challenge Barcelona next season.

Although Real also courted Ronaldo last year, but made little progress in the face of United's stubborn resistance to let their best player go. Should the transfer go through, Perez will have added a second superstar name to Real's ranks, having earlier this week secured the services of AC Milan's Kaka.

Perez is also about to break his own world transfer record, set when he signed Zinedine Zidane for 76 million euro from Juventus in 2001.

Should Carloz Tevez decide to walk away from the club, feeling slighted and neglected this past season, United will be left with Wayne Rooney and Bulgarian Dimitar Berbatov as its main attacking threats, although manager Alex Ferguson will have the funds necessary to buy both Ronaldo's replacement and a striker with the money from the winger's sale.

The deal is expected to be concluded by June 30.

United are better off without him. His heart is not in it. Poor performance in Champions League final. Selfish player not a team player. Always balmes others and does not look at himself. United will buy, but Berbatov still has a chance to improve himself and to show his worth. He did not have the best of seasons but showed some promise. If anyone can get the best out of him it is Ferguson.
