Croatia’s parliament votes to approve Kosor cabinet

The Croatian parliament in Zagreb voted approval on July 6 2009 of a new cabinet headed by incoming prime minister Jadranka Kosor, who succeeds Ivo Sanader who abruptly resigned last week.
 
She was asked by president Stipe Mesic to form a government. Sanader had suggested at his parting news conference that Kosor, who had served as his deputy, succeed him as head of government.
 
In the 153-seat parliament, she got 83 votes in favour, with opposition MPs saying that instead of Mesic having asked her to form a government, he should have called early elections.
 
Kosor is retaining most of Sanader’s cabinet.
 
She told Croatian HTV that one of her priorities as prime minister would be savings, and that she would not be "touching salaries or pensions for the moment," and that she would be working on "everything else that can be cut back on."
 
Croatian website Javno said that on July 3, Mesic had said that it would be very difficult for a Kosor cabinet to continue in office until the end of its terms, but could survive if it was prepared to take difficult decisions in the face of the economic crisis.
 
Kosor (56) is a former journalist and like her predecessor, a member of the Croatian Democratic Union.
