Swine flu: three new cases in Bulgaria

Three new cases of swine flu have been detected in Bulgaria, taking the total number of affected patients up to 19, the Health Ministry have said in a press statement.

The H1N1 virus firstly was discovered in a 14-year-old girl from Sofia, who had returned from Istanbul on July 13. The child is suffering from "high fever, throat pains and general discomfort," the report says. She has been hospitalised and placed in isolation.

The second case is a 15-year-old boy from Razgrad, who had arrived in Bulgaria on July 11 from South Africa. Displaying similar symptoms, the child was taken to a local hospital and after the examination proved positive, has also been hospitalised.

On July 14, a 62-year-old-male from Yambol was identified as a H1N1 carrier and was subsequently hospitalised. Reportedly, the man had also been on a trip to Turkey.

In none of the cases is there any information about the severity of the patients' condition. Experts believe, however, that the spread of swine flu cases in the Balkans will only intensify. But, to date, no reported fatalities have occurred in Bulgaria due to the H1N1 strain.
