Data from the UK-based European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) is to help Bulgarian meteorologists improve medium and long-term weather forecasts.

Under an agreement signed on July 22 2009 in Reading, meteorologists of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAS) are to have access to meteorological data and forecasts from the ECMWF, a BAS media statement said.

Valeri Spiridonov, deputy director of BAS, was quoted by Bulgarian news agency BTA as saying that the data from ECMWF would allow Bulgarian meteorologists to improve not only daily forecasts, but also its 15-day, as well as its monthly outlook.

Besides weather forecasts, the will also be used for aviation and by the agency responsible for the maintenance of the water levels of the Danube, the media statement said.

From the Bulgarian side, the agreement was signed by Konstantin Tsankov, director of the National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology at BAS.

Bulgaria would pay an annual membership fee to the ECMWF, the amount of which was not disclosed.
