Considerable reduction of air traffic in summer peak season in Varna and Bourgas

There has been a considerable reduction in traffic, registered by Bulgaria's two Black Sea international airports at Varna and Bourgas, according to statistics released by the German Fraport AG, which currently operates both airports, Investor.bg reported.

Bourgas international airport received a total of 499 148 passengers in July 2009, an 11.4 per cent decrease as opposed to the same period last year. Varna international airport meanwhile counted for 269 665 passengers, a drop of 15.6 per cent.

Frankfurt airport also registered a dwindle, albeit a smaller one, 3.3 per cent or 4.9 million passengers.

In Antalia, neighbouring Turkey, 1 315 604 passengers were serviced, a slight decrease of 0.7 per cent, whereas the airport in Lima, Peru, also managed by Fraport, revealed a rise in commerce corresponding to 1.2 per cent, attaining to 769 806 passengers.

On average, Fraport AG has recorded a 3.5 per cent drop in traffic from all five its airports. In July 2009, a total of 7.7 million people were serviced, as opposed to 8.5 million people in June 2009.

Freight flights also recorded a drop in commerce, in July 2009 a total of 180 000 metric tons were processed, a 9.6 per cent drop from July 2008.
