Elections for mayors of Sofia and the town of Vratsa, northern Bulgaria, will be held on November 15 2009, the Presidency said on August 13 2009.

The Municipal Election Commission had previously said that elections would take place on October 24 2009, but President Georgi Purvanov has moved them back three weeks.

Sofians will elect a new mayor following the appointment of incumbent Boiko Borissov as Prime Minister on July 27 2009.

Borissov's party, the Citizens for the European Development of Bulgaria (abbreviated as GERB in Bulgarian), won the largest share of votes at the July 5 2009 national elections and went on to form a government with Borissov as Prime Minister.

Borissov's deputy in the city hall, Minko Gerdjikov, currently serves as interim mayor until the elections.  This is the second time in five years Gerdjikov has been in this position. In 2005 he replaced former Sofia mayor Stefan Sofiyanski after he was elected to Parliament.

In 2005 Gerdjikov also decided to run for the post but lost the special elections to Borissov who later offered him a place on his team.

Vratsa will held an election after mayor Totyo Mladenov was appointed by Borissov as Social and Labour Policy Minister.

The towns of Razlog, Ruen and Radnevo will also have to hold special elections. The mayors of Razlog and Ruen got elected to Parliament while the mayor of Radnevo, Noncho Vodenicharov, died from a heart attack while taking part in TV reality show Survivor.
