Bulgarian police bust organised crime real estate fraud group

Eight people have been arrested in Sofia in connection with an alleged attempt to illegally transfer an apartment using forged documents, the Interior Ministry said in a media statement on August 26 2009.

The ministry said that the organised crime group was busted by officers from the chief directorate of the criminal police working in co-operation with the Sofia City Prosecutors Office.

Had the crime succeeded, elderly citizens would have been left without a home, Bulgarian news agency Focus said.

The group was held with 24-hour arrest warrants.

The arrests followed a tip-off 10 days ago. The attempted transaction involved an apartment with a tax assessment of about 70 000 leva.

The alleged perpetrators used false credentials to acquire all the documents necessary for the sale of the property, including tax assessments and plans. They had arranged to meet a notary to complete the transaction.

The group, aged from 37 to 49, included people with police records.

Investigations are continuing and an official request will be made to extend the period of detention. Police are seeking to identify other members of the organised crime group and establish details of its activities.
