Strong earthquake shakes Greek islands west of Sparta

A strong earthquake shook the western Greek Islands of Zakynthos and Kefalonia, west of Sparta in the Ionian Sea at around 7am on November 3, world media has reported.

According to Greek media, the tremor had a magnitude of 5.5 on the Richter scale, but the US Geological Survey, which tracks earth tremors worldwide, said it was as strong as 5.9 on the Richter scale.

The epicenter of the quake was triangulated west of the islands in the open sea. Greek seismologists have said the tremor is a typical occurrence of the region, which is prone to frequent jolts. It is still unclear whether the tremor was felt as far afield as southern Italy or Sicily.

There is still no information about injuries or structural damage on the Greek islands.
