Bulgaria to outline renewable energy zones

Bulgaria’s Environment Ministry will develop a strategy to designate areas that can host clean energy projects with no environmental impact, Environment Minister Nona Karadjova said.

The announcement comes after at end-October the Economy Ministry said it has started an analysis of the renewable energy potential in different regions and was studying grid-connection options.

Striving to meet its binding 16 per cent green energy target by 2020, Bulgaria has seen the announcement of project that, if all are completed, would add 8000MW from wind farms and 4000MW from solar power plants to its production capacity.

Karadjova said that consented projects encroaching upon territories outside the designated areas will not be demolished.

Following the inclusion of Cape Kaliakra into the European Union's Natura 2000 network of protected species habitat sites, the ministry has suspended the construction of an 80MW wind park by Austrian utility EVN near Bulgarevo, some 10km southwest of the cape.

Bulgaria’s Environment Ministry will pool efforts with the Economy Ministry to lay the groundwork for an eco-efficient economy, Karadjova said during the fourth annual meeting of Government and business organised by Kapital weekly and the Confederation of Employers and Industrialists in Bulgaria on November 3.
