Leonid Lavchev, deputy head of the National Veterinary Service, has been arrested after demanding a 1000 leva bribe from a milk- processing company, BTA Bulgarian news agency said on November 5 2009.

Lavchev sought the bribe from the Bulmilk company, who has a dairy farm in Konush village near the town of Haskovo, central Bulgaria and sells milk products under the Tonus brand.

The company had complained to the police about Lavchev's demand. He was arrested in Sofia after an individual sent by Lavchev to collect the money in Haskovo was detained and made a full confession. Lavchev has been detained for 24 hours.

Focus news agency quoted Interior Minister Tsvetan Tsvetanov as saying that the process of licensing dairy farms was currently underway, so offering opportunities for corruption.
