Sofia schools will suspend classes as of November 9 2009, Bulgaria's Health Ministry said on November 6, quoted by the Bulgarian National Television.

Kindergartens, however, will not shut down altogether, but would be dealt with on a case-by-case basis. Universities have to decide for themselves whether to suspend classes.

The number of infected in the capital city was rising relentlessly and approaching the pandemic benchmark of 200 for every 10 000 people. Children and students appear to be two groups in which the virus spread faster, the report said.

During a flu pandemic, authorities expect as much as 30 per cent of the total population to be affected ultimately, with those exposed to the highest risk being pregnant women and people who suffer from chronic ailments. With combination of parallel ailments, the virus could cause meningitis, pneumonia or bronchitis, experts say.

Doctors advise people not to take unnecessary risks, attending social events or making contact with people who are ill. The latest figures from the Health Ministry showed that about 150 000 Bulgarians are sick, the vast majority of them with the H1N1 strain and not seasonal flu.

I could not understand, how the ministry can close schools but not the kindergarden's. It is necessary to keep the risk away for the humans. I am working in a kindergarden and don't want to take the risk!
