Lyulin Motorway: Bulgarian workers paid a third of their Turkish colleagues

Bulgarian workers along the Lyulin motorway are paid one third of the wages which Turkish company Mapa Cengiz pays its own personnel, Investor reported on November 26 2009.

The Lyulin A5 motorway links the Sofia ring road with the Daskalovo interchange near Pernik and has a total length of 19km.

The work is identical, the responsibilities are the same and Bulgarians and Turks are working together  for the same company, but the Turkish employees are paid three times as much, resulting in numerous complaints from Bulgarian workers, the Confederation of the Independent Trade Union (abbreviated as KNSB in Bulgarian) said.

The workers' unions cite resentment among Bulgarians at the numerous "unfair" advantages granted to the Turks after they were granted the permit to work in Bulgaria during the summer. The Bulgarians have repeatedly complained of gross discrimination, and violation of their human rights.

In light of the growing tension in the Turkish company Mapa Cengiz, Zheliazko Hristov, president of the KNSB has called for an urgent meeting with Minister of Regional Development Rossen Plevneliev and the Minister of Labour and Social Policy, Totyu Mladenov, Investor said.

The Lyulin motorway project costs 7.5 million leva a km, while a total of 116 million euro has been allocated for its construction, 37 million euro of which are provided by Bulgarian taxpayers.
