News TV broadcaster Re:TV announced that it would stop broadcasting after November 27 2009.

The reduced advertising market and the global financial crisis was given by the owners, Citizen Media Foundation, as the reason for the decision, Bulgarian daily Dnevnik said.

In an open letter to its employees, the owners said "For almost two years we have invested money and effort in creating civil television, led by the understanding that the public debate needs a place where important news is communicated and where qualitative discussions on the problems of society and state can take place."

"With the creation of the channel, we wanted to show several things; one was that transparent ownership and financing of media in Bulgaria is possible and that there is a place in Bulgarian society for serious and independent television journalism. We failed," the open letter said.

Investments in the project had totaled nine million leva, money that came from donors of the foundation.

Re:TV started its broadcasts in May 2008 and was headed by journalist Assen Grigorov, who before that had hosted the morning programme on Bulgarian National Television (BNT).

The board of directors of Re:TV included financier Svetoslav Boshilov, Ivo Prokopiev, publisher of Dnevnik and Capital, and political Scientist Ivan Krastev.

Re:TV stopped broadcasting on the evening of November 27, at 10pm.
