The Daily Mail
published an article written by a former police-officer, who advertises himself on
his own website as a "leading criminologist & child protection expert," in which social network site Facebook was practically accused of aiding social predators in attacking 14-year-old girls.
According to the article in the Daily Mail, former police-officer Mark Williams-Thomas had posed as a 14 year-old and "within seconds" was approached by older men who, Williams-Thomas said, "wanted to perform a sex act."
Facebook has been, understandably, fuming over the publication, especially after the newspaper published an apology, saying that the social networking site in question was, actually, not Facebook, but another site.
Williams-Thomas claimed editors of the Daily Mail had introduced the name of Facebook into the text and said they had left it in despite being told it was wrong, according to The Guardian.
Both the Daily Mail and Williams-Thomas have, however, refused to name the network in question, saying that it might attract unwelcome users, according to The Guardian, who quoted him as saying that "the site would implode."
The only reasonable conclusions can be that the Daily Mail simply wanted to sell more copies and Williams-Thomas was more interested in getting his name out as a "leading criminologist & child protection expert" than anything else.
Unless of course the name of the social networking site was not the only thing that was made up in this story.
This comment has been removed by the moderator because it contained foul, abusive or discriminating language
not 'recently'. The DM publishes sensationalistic poo consistently.
But it doesn't let social networking sites off the hook, either.
I guess the network in question was adultfriendfinder?
Well what a shock! I very much doubt if this article was the only made up thing the Mail has published recently.
It is only the fact that the story is about Facebook, which is big enough to threaten legal action, that has caught them on the hop this time.
