Jane Lynch of Fox's "Glee" hosted the show Sunday in Los Angeles.

The cast and crew of ABC's "Modern Family", the mockumentary about three assorted couples, also took home the Emmys for best actor and actress in a comedy series and best supporting actor and actress in a comedy.

Julianna Margulies of the CBS show "The Good Wife" won the prize for best actress in a drama series, while Kyle Chandler of NBC's "Friday Night Lights" walked off with the Emmy for best actor in a drama series.

Peter Dinklage won for his turn as the clever, but rude Tyrion on HBO's popular medieval fantasy series "Game of Thrones."

"American Idol" – the most-watched show on U.S. television for the past seven years – was left empty handed again in the reality-competition show category, which was won by "The Amazing Race" on CBS.

Cult ad agency drama "Mad Men" won the best drama Emmy for the fourth year.

Several artists, better known for their accomplishments in the film industry, were recognized for their television achievements.

Martin Scorsese won an Emmy for directing work on HBO's "Boardwalk Empire."

The award for best actress in a miniseries or movie went to Kate Winslet for HBO's "Mildred Pierce."

Veteran actress Maggie Smith beat her competition to win the best supporting actress in a miniseries or movie for her work in "Downton Abbey" on PBS.
