Greek prime minister George Papandreou has won a vote of confidence by 153 to 145 votes in a late-night sitting in parliament in Athens.

The vote came after, a day earlier, Papandreou scrapped a controversial referendum that had angered world leaders trying to formulate the euro zone rescue plan, the Voice of America said.

The BBC reported that in an address to parliament before the vote, Papandreou ruled out snap elections, saying they would be "catastrophic".

He said he did not care about his post and the leadership of any government of national unity would be negotiable.
