Editorial: Bourgas – Alexandroupolis pipeline

The endgame following the Bulgarian Government’s decision to withdraw from the Bourgas – Alexandroupolis pipeline project is likely to be a traumatic one.

The decision, which the Government said was motivated by it seeing insufficient financial and economic benefits, already has drawn from Russian oil company Transneft a formal expression of disappointment, and no doubt Athens will be unhappy as well.

The move by Sofia was hardly a surprise, however, given the less-than-lukewarm approach taken by Prime Minister Boiko Borissov’s Government since it took office in July 2009. Against the background of local concerns in the Black Sea port city about environmental implications of the project, it is notable that these were not officially stated among reasons for withdrawal.

As the question of compensation to be paid by Bulgaria is dealt with in the time to come, the divorce is certain to be a messy one.
