The vision spelt out in Parliament by newly-sworn-in President Rossen Plevneliev is ambitious and perhaps even achievable – while the path he points to is one that will be arduous rather than rosy.

Plevneliev, of course, is the country’s new head of state, not its head of government. Yet, if he can succeed in keeping to the role that he envisages for his presidency, as a centre of debate, as an institution that is non-partisan, he may fill a needed gap for a voice that is independent, inspirational and credible.

Because Bulgaria does not need yet another politician.

Administration of the country has improved, it is correct to take pride in its fiscal stability and a few policy areas are well-managed. Yet its politics generally are conducted in a petty partisan way and institutions such as the church that could provide moral leadership suffer serious credibility problems.

The country needs unity and inspiration around specific goals and Plevneliev has put forward specific numbers that he wants to see achieved. We wish him and all in this country success in achieving this vision.
