Editorial: Stormy weather

Fri, Feb 10 2012 09:00 CET Clive Leviev-Sawyer, Editor-in-Chief 3046 Views
The surest forecast about the hazardous winter weather in Bulgaria, which at this writing has taken at least eight lives, was that it would be used to conjure up a political storm.

Representatives of previous governments, whose performance in previous natural disasters was nothing short of disgraceful, have slung mud at the current one, alleging under-performance in the face of floods and freezing weather.

However discredited those asking it, the question is a legitimate one. With the weather crisis not yet over, the performance of the Government in actual delivery of assistance – money and equipment – and in aiding recovery in the coming months must be kept under the most careful scrutiny.

This Government has a chance to set itself apart, not for the sake of political gain, but for the sake of those it was elected to serve.
