The Bulgarian Orthodox Church is collecting money, clothing and other necessities to assist those hard-hit by recent floods.

Churches in Sofia have set up collection points in a campaign with the blessing of church head Patriarch Maxim.

At some churches in Bulgaria, memorial services for the flood victims had been held, reports said.

On February 12, at the Saints Kiril i Metodii church, the largest in Bourgas, a prayer service was held to ask St Nicholas to intercede at Divine level to ask for an end to the severe weather which, in the past week, has cost 10 lives.

Other organisations that have got involved in collecting clothes and money include the Scout movement in Bulgaria. A week ago, Bulgarian National Television and the Bulgarian Red Cross each started fund-raising campaigns. Details of how to donate to the campaigns via SMS or bank deposits may be found here.
