The situation in Bulgaria was normalising as winter weather eased after the harsh conditions of recent days, although some districts in the country woke to a "Code Yellow" hazardous weather warning on February 14.

The Danube River bridge was still closed to vehicles weighing more than seven and a half tons, Bulgarian National Television said.

Border crossings with Greece and Macedonia were open.

In the mountains, there was a serious danger of avalanches because of accumulated snow, while in several high-traffic areas, clearing of masses of snow was planned to reduce danger to vehicles.

Motorway surfaces were wet and caution when driving was advised, reports said.

A ban on the movement of vehicles of more than 10 tons on national roads in the regions of Silistra and Haskovo remained in force.

A "Code Yellow" weather warning was declared because of low temperatures in Sofia, Vidin, Montana, Pernik, Kyustendil, Lovech and Gabrovo. Code Yellow is issued when temperatures between minus nine and minus 14 degrees Celsius are forecast, and in parts of western Bulgaria, morning temperatures were below 10 degrees.

However, it was expected that as temperatures rose in the course of the day, the Code Yellow warning would be withdrawn.
