The "Blue Zone" paid parking area system will be in effect in Plovdiv from February 14 2012, Bulgarian National Television said.

Because Bulgaria’s second city this month has seen snowfalls much heavier than those usual in recent years, the paid parking system has not operated for three weeks, resulting in a loss of income of tens of thousands of leva.

Accumulated snow was being cleared from streets between Plovdiv main railway station and the main square to allow cars to park so that fees could be collected, the report said.

The planned date of the introduction of the paid parking system, for which motorists may pay via SMS, coincided with the suspension of parking because of weather problems, Bulgarian National Television said.

Plovdiv deputy mayor Alexander Durzhikov said that his calculations were that the city had lost about 40 000 to 50 000 leva in parking fees in three weeks.

In the past day, the municipal cleaning company had worked continuously to clear streets, the report said.
